LMA West Annual In-House Counsel Summit

On May 2, Blattel Communications’ Traci Stuart moderated a panel of in-house legal counsel from top companies to discuss their relationships with outside firms and some of the most pressing issues they face. This annual event highlights the “voice of the client,” offering insights on everything from client service expectations to key differentiators that influence hiring decisions when in-house attorneys look to bring in outside counsel. This year’s panel included:

  • Laurie Charrington: Director of Patent Litigation, Netflix
  • Venessa Henlon: Senior Counsel, Real Estate Law; Gap, Inc.
  • Eric Coborn: Senior Product Counsel, Rakuten Rewards

Nicole Diaz, Global Head of Integrity & Compliance Legal for Snap, Inc. participated in panel preparation, but was unable to attend. The panelists agreed that they did not rely heavily on RFPs in selecting outside counsel. Relationships and referrals are most important in their selection process and they focus on finding firms with the right expertise for specific matters. Tried and true best practices remain important. Be sure to really listen to the client and what they are requesting. If you don’t know, ask questions so you don’t over or under deliver. They want consultative advice, not just a regurgitation of case law. Help them plan for potential outcomes with practical advice. Be a resource off the clock, from helping them meet their MCLE requirements to providing relevant updates on applicable case law, you are in a position to add value in helping them perform their roles.

Each panelist emphasized the importance of ongoing communication throughout the matter’s life cycle. Avoid treating the matter as a transaction, when you could be building a long-term relationship.
